To gain the friendship of a cat
is a difficult thing. If you are
worthy of his affection, a cat will
be your friend, but never your slave;
he keeps his free will though he loves,
and will not do for you what he thinks
unreasonable; but if he once gives
himself to you, it is with absolute confidence. Sometimes he will sit
upon the carpet in front of you with
eyes so melting, so caressing and so human that they almost frighten you,
for it is impossible to believe a soul
is not there.
